Japan Class Series - Japanese Curry, October 20, 2018

History of Japanese Curry

Introduced by the British, Japanese Curry was originally considered to be Western cuisine. Japanese curry exists next to Indian-style curry in Japan today.

The addition of potatoes to the curry stew was introduced by American agriculturalist William S. Clark in 1876 during the rice shortage.

Instant curry roux was first sold in powder form in the 1920s and then in cube form in the 1950s. The cube curry roux business is over a billion in exports annually.

Today, vacuum-sealed single serve curry makes up over 30% of sales.
